VCU Sustainability operates the VCU Free Store that serves as an inclusive, on-campus resource to address basic necessities of living for members of the VCU community.
The Free Store is an on-campus resource that promotes equitable access to everyday needs like school/art supplies, electronics, home goods and more, while keeping usable goods out of our landfills. Current VCU students and employees can donate items and can take items for free! Help us maintain this effort by donating your unneeded goods today.
How to give
The Free Store is accepts donations by appointment. To schedule an appointment, email firstname.lastname@example.org or call (804) 628-1163.
The Free Store accepts the following items:
- Books and school supplies
- Art and art supplies
- Electronics and appliances
- Small furniture and decor
- Kitchenware and utensils
- Tools and gardening supplies
- Non-perishable or canned food
- Unopened hygiene products
- holiday and event decorations
- Clean sports equipment
- Trash cans, hangers, lamps, etc.
The Free Store does not accept the following items:
- Clothing, fabric or shoes
- Pillows, bedding or upholstery
- Opened food or toiletries
- Broken and unusable goods
How to take
Every item in the Free Store is assigned one of four tiers. The number of items you may take in one visit is dependent on the tier of the item(s). Per week, each individual may take items from one tier only.
Items have an approximate value of $0 to $10.
Each week, you may take up to five tier one items.
Items include kitchen utensils, clothes hangers, notebooks and more.
Items have an approximate value of $11 to $24.
Each week, you may take up to two tier two items.
Items include pots and pans, books, decor and more.
Items have an approximate value of $25 to $49.
Each week, you may take one tier three item.
Items include small kitchen appliances, small furniture and more.
Items have an approximate value of $50 or more.
Each semester, you may take one tier four item.
Items include minifridges, microwaves, televisions and more.
