Greenhouse gas emissions dashboard
VCU reports greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions information through SIMAP® (Sustainability Indicator Management & Analysis Platform), a carbon and nitrogen-accounting platform that offers universities a simple and comprehensive online tool to track, analyze and improve campus-wide sustainability. See the full SIMAP dashboard to see VCU’s GHG reported emissions. Note this information is reported by the university and does not include VCU Health System data.
Since 2008, GHG calculation best practices have changed and, as of 2023, VCU’s total includes a wider range of Scope 3 emissions. Additionally, since then the university grew by more than 4.5 million square feet as well as improved GHG tracking. While these changes provide a more accurate picture of GHG emissions at VCU, direct comparisons to 2008 data are complicated.
Ultimately, GHG emission reports are most useful when used as a tool to understand whether VCU is on track to achieve the commitment made to reach net zero by 2050. The review of our emissions data is one part of a larger effort to create the ONE VCU Sustainability Plan and determine the actions VCU needs to take to reach our goals.
